As a board member of Harvest Home Farmer’s Markets in New York City, I am proud to invite readers to the Second Annual Savor the Season – Uptown!

Savor the Season – Uptown is an exclusive event to celebrate the more than 2 decades in which Harvest Home has been in operation. Designed as a walk around tasting, up to 300 guests will sample the signature dishes, beverages and desserts from several uptown restaurants that feature some of the most outstanding chefs north of 96th Street.  Harvest Home operates 17 seasonal farmer’s markets, most of which are located in NYC’s “food desert” neighborhoods – areas with an under-supply of fresh produce and an over-supply of fast food outlets. “We work in partnership with 30 local farmers from upstate New York and New Jersey, as well as community organizations, churches and elected officials, to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to these neighborhoods,” says founder and CEO Maritza Owens. To ensure the produce is affordable, the markets accept electronic benefit transfers (EBTs), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP), and Women Infant and Children and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers (WIC-FMNP), as well as New York City subsidy coupons for low income adults. “We at Harvest Home envision a world in which all people are healthy and our mission is to provide low-income communities with access to farm fresh local produce and the education to achieve healthier lifestyles,” says Owens. To achieve this mission, the market also creates programs that promote healthy lifestyles and good nutrition to complement and reinforce the benefits of the farmers markets. During the summer, Harvest Home sponsor Play Streets – car-free streets adjacent to the markets that provide children and other community members with space to engage in active play and physical activity. Throughout the year, Harvest Home offers Eating for Good Health cooking demonstrations and workshops that teach low-income families ways to combat health challenges like obesity and diabetes though cooking and eating nutritious meals.

Support the Market and Come to Savor the Season — Uptown 2014 This year Harvest Home will honor its long-time partner EmblemHealth for their commitment toward “Making Health a Habit.” Proceeds from the evening will support the development of Harvest Home’s Educational Center which, when combined with the markets, will provide year-round health and wellness programs to New York City residents.
